6th December - St. Nikolaus

Saint Nicholas, also called Nikolaos of Myra, was a historic 4th-century saint and Greek Bishop of Myrna (in modern-day Turkey). Because of the many miracles attributed to his intercession, he is also known as Nikolaos the Wonderworker. He had a reputation for secret gift-giving, such as putting coins in the shoes of those who left them out for him, and thus became the model for Santa Claus, whose modern name comes from the Dutch Sinterklass. His reputation evolved among the faithful, as was common for early Christian saints. In 1087, part of the relics (about half of the bones) were furtively  translated to Bari, in southeastern Italy; for this reason, he is also known as Nikolaos of Bari. The remaining bones were taken to Venice.
The historical Saint Nicholas is remembered and revered among Catholic and Orthodox Christians. He is also honored by various Angilcan and Lutheran churches. Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of sailors, merchants, archers, thieves, children, and students in various countries in the Balkans and Eastern Europe, as well as in parts of Western Europe.

In Germany on the night of 5th December (St. Nicholas Eve) St. Nikolaus brings sweets and chocolates to children.
In Northern Germany children clean their parent's boots and put them outside the door, whereas in Southern Germany children put a plate (teller) outside the door and wait St. Nikolaus to bring them the desired gifts!
Here a famous children song for St. Nicholas Eve.

Bald ist Nikolaus Abend da
Lasst uns froh und munter sein,
und uns recht von Herzen freun!
Lustig, lustig, traleralera!
Bald ist Nikolaus Abend da,
bald ist Nikolaus Abend da!

Dann stell ich den Teller auf,
Nik'laus legt gewiß was drauf.
Lustig, lustig, traleralera!
Bald ist Nikolaus Abend da,
bald ist Nikolaus Abend da!

Wenn ich schlaf, dann träume ich,
jetzt bringt Nik'laus was für mich.
Lustig, lustig, traleralera!
Bald ist Nikolaus Abend da,
bald ist Nikolaus Abend da!

Wenn ich aufgestanden bin,
lauf ich schnell zu dem Teller hin.
Lustig, lustig, traleralera!
Bald ist Nikolaus Abend da,
bald ist Nikolaus Abend da!

Nik'laus ist ein guter Mann,
dem man nicht genug danken kann!
Lustig, lustig, traleralera!
Bald ist Nikolaus Abend da,
bald ist Nikolaus Abend da!
Soon Nicholas Eve is here!
Let us be happy and cheerful
And rejoice in the Lord!
Jolly, jolly, tralera-lera,
Soon Nicholas Eve is here!
Soon Nicholas Eve is here!

Then I put the plate out
Nick'll surely put somethin' on it.
Jolly, jolly, tralera-lera,
Soon Nicholas Eve is here!
Soon Nicholas Eve is here!

When I sleep then I dream:
Now Nicholas brings me something.
Jolly, jolly, tralera-lera,
Soon Nicholas Eve is here!
Soon Nicholas Eve is here!

When I rise (in the morning)
I dash quickly to the plate.
Jolly, jolly, tralera-lera,
Soon Nicholas Eve is here!
Soon Nicholas Eve is here!

Nicholas is a good man
Whom we can't thank enough.
Jolly, jolly, tralera-lera,
Soon Nicholas Eve is here!
Soon Nicholas Eve is here!
