New York Photography 1890 - 1950 in Hamburg

New York is the capital of photography.
During the late 19th century, its rapidly growing skyline inspired the pioneers of this new medium.
They took photographs of skyscrapers, ports and train stations and began to develop photography as an indipendent art form.
In NY Pictorialism developed from an impressionistic approach towards street photography and abstract photography.
Central elements of these black and white photos were light and shadows.
Black and white was also able to symbolize the light and dark sides of the society - photos were not used only to portray the city but also the individual living in, overwhelmed by and shaped by the city.
The exhibitions brings togheter the most importan artistic prospectives ranging from Alfred Stieglitz, Andreas Feininnger, Lewis Hine,Walker Evans, to Aaron Siskind, Imoger Cunningham, Lisette Model, and Man Ray.
